Still, the sentence you quoted does not make any comparison between which bad behavior is worse. It only says that the upcoming Mayweather-McGregor fight is between someone who is “a bit flamboyant and woman abuser and is probably at a second-grade reading level,” and someone who is “a full-fledged racist.”  

There is nothing before or after the sentence you quoted which says anything like, “we want Mayweather to win because he only abuses women and isn’t a racist like McGregor.”

3 missing words would totally change the meaning of that sentence to me. The presence of “sure,” and “but thankfully” seem to imply the author prefers abuse to racism.

In a roundabout way, anyways. It’s not straight-up “one is better than the other” but rather “I want to like Mayweather to win but he’s a woman abuser... thankfully McGregor is racist, so I can root for Mayweather anyway”. Which, tbh, is still saying racism is worse when the message should be “let’s watch two dicks beat the shit out of each other”.

That could just as easily be read as, “I want to root for Mayweather, but he’s an asshole because abuses women, but thankfully McGregor is also an asshole because he’s a racist, so I can still root for Mayweather.”

Yes, it places abusing women and racism in opposition to each other, but there is not a value judgment of one being worse than the other. At most, it claims that abusing women and being racist are close enough in levels of assholeitude that they cancel each other out as reasons to root for or against one particular asshole in this situation.

Apart from the closing of the article, where it’s stated that they want Mayweather to win. If you’re turning it into a fight between different versions of assholery, the second you say “I hope x wins” it sends the message that “assholery x” is morally superior to “assholery y”.

Wanting someone to win a boxing match is not necessarily an endorsement of their particular brand of assholery over their opponent’s brand of assholery. There are too many other reasons why someone could want Mayweather to win the fight separate from the two competing brands of assholery.

No, it’s really not. A reader could derive that message if they are predisposed to think the author or the publication is biased. That could be because the author or publication’s biases have been shown in other things they’ve written, or the reader’s own biases. But the language of this article itself does not say that being racist is worse than abusing women.

I agree the article has problems, but the author hoping Mayweather “knocks [McGregor’s] racist head right off his body” is not the same thing as the author saying that racism is worse than abusing women.

The fight is not the literal embodiment of women abusing vs. racism, where whichever fighter someone wants to to lose, that’s the bad behavior the person thinks is worse.

No, you’re misinterpreting.

Before taking each fighter’s brand of assholery into account, the author prefers that Mayweather wins.

The author questions whether it is acceptable to root for Mayweather, because he “may be a bit flamboyant and woman abuser and is probably at a second-grade reading level”

The author points out that McGregor, who she already prefers would lose the fight, also happens to be a racist.

Because McGregor is a racist, and thus also some kind of an asshole, it is therefore ok for the author to root for Mayweather, in spite of him being a different brand of asshole.

Is this a dumb line of reasoning? Probably! But it also does not mean the author thinks being a racist is worse than beating women. That is one implication more than what appears in the article.
